Natural disasters, including earthquakes, are devastating natural events that people can encounter at any time in their lives. Reducing the devastating and damaging effects of disasters can be made possible by increasing individuals’ disaster knowledge and awareness levels through education. This research aims to investigate the disaster knowledge and awareness levels of secondary school students according to various variables. The research is in survey design. The population consists of 7420 secondary school students studying in the 2023-2024 academic year in the center of a province located in the Southern Marmara Region (1st degree earthquake zone) in Türkiye. The sample consists of 840 secondary school students at all grade levels determined by appropriate sampling from the population. An information form asking about class, gender, taking a course/seminar on disasters, a disaster achievement test and a disaster awareness scale were used as data collection tools. Disaster knowledge of 5th graders differed significantly from other grade levels and was found to be lower. Disaster awareness did not differ according to class level. While disaster knowledge did not differ significantly by gender, a significant difference was found in disaster awareness in favor of women. In addition, the disaster knowledge level of those who took disaster-related courses/seminars was significantly higher than those who did not; however, their disaster awareness did not show a significant difference.
