The chemical structure of greenhouse covering materials deteriorate due to ultraviolet
(UV) rays from the sun and become unusable at the end of a single season. For this reason,
manufacturers have started to develop coatings that provide UV resistance. It is also known that
long-lasting greenhouse covers can be produced by simply increasing the nylon thickness,
without the UV filter addition. In the literature, there are studies that observed the UV filtering
ability of greenhouse covers exposed to varying temperatures throughout the year. However,
these studies obtain data from analyzes based on periodic samplings. Real-time monitoring of
UV transmission in changing ambient temperatures is only possible under controlled conditions
due to the flexibility of the material. For this reason, it has become necessary to design a system
that includes a UV radiation source and sensing element, in which a controlled atmosphere can
be provided. A test system has been designed in line with the stated purpose and requirement.
The system sends the UV transmission and ambient temperature of the plastic cover material
placed in the UV gel dryer via Bluetooth. UV lamps in the dryer with a total power of 36W
and a wavelength of 365 nm emits heat during their operation, thereby increasing the ambient
temperature gradually. The sensor assembly, on which the sample is placed, is insulated with an
opaque enclosure so that only the sensing diode is exposed. The assembly consists of Arduino
Nano board used as a microprocessor unit, HC-05 Bluetooth module, MCP9700 industrial
temperature sensor and Grove UV sensor driver. The system ensures wireless data transfer via
Bluetooth to the mobile devices where the data stored. In this way, the UV filtering ability of the
samples at varying ambient temperatures can be monitored in real time.
