Özet

The researchers who work in the fields such as distance education, instructional technology, etc. during the Covid-19 pandemic suggests naming this type of education as "emergency remote teaching" to distinguish the remote teaching activities carried out in this period from the distance education carried out under normal circumstances. Metaphor analysis is a research method especially for the indepth analysis of new and complex concepts and phenomena, and it is an effective mechanism for individuals to construct and understand their own world. This study aims to investigate the thoughts and interpretations of healthcare students towards online education through metaphors. The sample of this study consists of 98 students from the faculty of medicine, faculty of dentistry and health service vocational college. The research has been designed according to phenomenological research design. Inductive content analysis was used to examine the metaphors and rationale together. The first of the two themes emphasizes the advantages of online teaching such as the “to be able to record the session, watch the session when available, have reinforcement from the recordings, prevent the interruption of education, and more value should be given to online teaching”. The second theme that emerged about the online teaching is its negative aspects. The students stated that online teaching is not appropriate to gaining skills, it is not possible to practise the knowledge, it cannot replace face-to-face teaching, it is not suitable for interaction, it does not provide deep learning opportunities for the students, it is not appropriate for all subjects or disciplines, it creates nonrecoverable losses, it is like torture, and, it results in laziness. In the current process, it is recommended that the evaluation process of online education activities, which is also called emergency remote teaching, should be carried out by investigating the opinions and interpretations of the educators.
