Özet

India’s rapidly expanding aviation sector presents a significant challenge for sustainable

development. This study explores the complex relationship between economic growth, air

transportation, financial development, and environmental degradation in India using the

ecological footprint as a comprehensive indicator of resource consumption. Employing a novel

fractional frequency Fourier approach, the study analyzes the validity of the Environmental

Kuznets Curve hypothesis for India’s aviation sector from 1970 to 2021. Findings contradict

the EKC hypothesis, revealing a U-shaped relationship between economic growth and

environmental degradation. This highlights the need for proactive strategies to decouple

aviation growth from its environmental impacts. The study finds that financial development

plays a mitigating role in promoting environmental sustainability by facilitating investments in

clean technologies and sustainable practices within the aviation industry. However, increased

air transport freight activity is associated with a larger ecological footprint, emphasizing the

need for sustainable logistics practices. The research proposes policy recommendations for

India’s aviation sector, including promoting renewable fuels, implementing carbon pricing

mechanisms, and incentivizing green logistics services. By integrating these recommendations

into policy frameworks, India can foster a more sustainable model of production and

consumption within this vital sector, ensuring its growth does not come at the expense of the environment.
