Özet

Efficient sodium exclusion significantly improves the salt resistance of maize (Zea mays L). It is our aim to understand the mechanisms of sodium exclusion at the various levels of plant organization and to utilize exclusion strategies in a genetic approach to increase the salt resistance of maize. By self-crossing maize hybrid Pioneer 3906 and recurrent selection for efficient sodium exclusion over eight generations we have established an inbred line that genetically combines efficient sodium exclusion at the root surface with efficient sodium exclusion at the level of xylem parenchyma cells. This germplasm may be used as an important component of breeding programs to improve the salt resistance of maize.
