Beyond being an answer to questions such as 'Who are you?’, ‘Who are you from?’, identity is a set of data on the cultural status of communities and nations. Identity is treated as a concept, not a phenomenon, because of its processes that are difficult to define and complete. The concept of identity, which entered the discussion area of social sciences in the twentieth century, is the subject of research of social identity theory. According to the theory of social identity introduced into the literature by John Turner (1947-2011) and Henri Tajfel (1919-1982), identity has individual and social/cultural spheres. When indicators of individual and cultural identity are used in the art of figurative painting, they have the possibility of representing the identity of individuals and communities over the human image. Art history is intertwined with represented, reconstructed cultural identity indicators. In this text, which deals with the concept of identity in figurative painting, the painting 'Madame X' by the painter Halil Pasha, who is known for the works he produced in the late periods of the Ottoman Empire, is discussed in the context of the representation of cultural identity.
