Hekimlerin
mandibular kesicilerde kök kanal preparasyonu sırasında distal duvarda oluşabilecek perforasyon riski açısından
dikkatli olmaları önerilmektedir.
AIM: To evaluate the root dentin thickness(DT) of mandibular incisors and the effect of gender on this thickness
using cone beam computed tomography(CBCT).
MATERIAL AND METHOD: CBCT images of the patients who had applied to the Radiology Department of Faculty
of Dentistry were evaluated, retrospectively. A total of 200 mandibular incisors of 25 female and 25 male patients
were evaluated. DT of mesial and distal walls of the teeth were measured using CBCT at 1mm (Coronal), 5mm
(Middle), and 9mm (Apical) below the cementoenamel junction and recorded with gender information. Statistical
analyzes were performed using SPSS 22.00 at p<0.05 significance level. Since it was seen with the Shapiro Wilk
test that the data were not normally distributed, the comparisons between root levels were compared with the
Friedman test, and the gender-related differences were compared with the Mann-Whitney U test. The Wilcoxon
signed-rank test was used to compare the DT of the mesial and distal walls.
RESULTS: According to the obtained data, no difference was observed between the genders in terms of DT(p>0.05).
Statistically significant decrease was observed in terms of DT from coronal to apical in both gender(p<0.001). DT
of the distal wall in the middle region(p=.008) in women and distal wall in the apical region in men(p=.007) was
found to be significantly less in mandibular centrals. It was determined that the DT of distal wall was significantly
lesser on the middle and apical regions than that of coronal region of the mandibular lateral incisors in both
women(p<0.001, p<0.001 respectively) and men(p<0.001, p=.002, respectively).
CONCLUSION: According to this study, it was observed that the DT of the mandibular incisors was independent
of gender. Clinicians are advised to be careful in terms of perforation risk that may occur on the distal wall of the
mandibular incisors while root canal preparation.
