Modelling of the Spawning Pattern of European Anchovy (Engraulis encrasicolus, Linnaeus, 1758) with Using Bootstrap Regression of Frequent Ichthyoplankton Sampling Data

Özet

To understand rapid temporal fluctuations during the spawning period, weekly ichthyoplankton sampling was conducted in the Çanakkale Strait (North Aegean Sea) between April and December 2023 using a WP-2 net. The anchovy spawning period was estimated to last 22 weeks (May 23-October 30). Weekly observations revealed that monthly averages smoothed short-term fluctuations and masked major abundance peaks. Due to the asynchronous spawning pattern, 7-8 spawning peaks and 2 major spawning peaks were detected during spawning. A bootstrap-based resampling approach was applied to analyze the relationship between biological and environmental variables. According to bootstrap regression, each 1 unit increase in temperature led to an increase in egg abundance by 337.722 units on average, whereas every 1 unit increase in salinity led to an average decrease of 36.456 units in the number of larvae.
