Objective: To determine the prevelence of HBV, HCV, AIDS and syphilis in the citizens of the former Soviet Union who live temporarily in Trabzon, Turkey. Study design: 1251 women from the former Soviet countries who live in Trabzon temporarily, have been screened for HBsAg, anti-HVC, anti-HIV 1,2, and VDRL seropositivity. The results have been compared with the results of 7735 pregnant women in our city. Results: HBsAg, anti-HCV, anti HIV 1,2 and VDRL were serologically positive in 57 (46 %), 95 (7.6 %) 3 (0.2 %) and 122 (9.8 %) women, respectively. These figures were higher than that of pregnant women (4.6%, 0.3%, 0% ve 0.1%, respectively) except HBsAg (for HBsAg p>0.05; and for anti-HCV p<0.0001, for anti-HIV p<0.002, and for VDRL p<0.0001); and similar with the results of Turkish sex-workers except anti-HIV Conclusion: Screening for sexually transmitted diseases should be done frequently. Sex workers and their clients must be educated for preventive measures.
