Özet

Local journals published by the People’s Houses (Halkevleri) during the Early Republican period constitute unique historical sources, as they reveal how Republican ideology was perceived, internalized, and reproduced in the provinces. This study focuses on Küçük Menderes, a journal published by the Tire People’s House between 25 April 1940 and 23 April 1942, and examines the cultural, ideological, and social functions of local periodicals. In this context, the research aims to demonstrate how the journal fulfilled its mission of archiving local culture, informing the public, and disseminating Republican ideology at the local level. Adopting a qualitative research approach, the study is based on a holistic examination of all texts published in Küçük Menderes. The data set consists of all materials published in the journal’s twelve issues, and no sampling was applied. Articles on history, economy, health, folk literature, and folklore were examined within a thematic, descriptive, and interpretative framework. In addition, the authorship structure, article genres, and the contributors’ levels of participation were evaluated. By addressing its thematic structure, discursive orientations, and author profiles in a comprehensive manner, the study analyzes the journal’s contribution to the social and cultural structure of Tire. The findings indicate that Küçük Menderes functioned as an important publication that rendered the Republic's policies of populism and cultural modernization visible at the provincial level. The historical articles featured in the journal integrated the national historical narrative with local memory, while folk literature and folklore compilations demonstrate that oral culture was recorded in writing and incorporated into the construction of national culture. Furthermore, articles on economics and health assumed the function of raising public awareness and guiding the populace under the extraordinary conditions created by the Second World War. In this respect, the journal represents a significant historical document detailing the multi-layered reflections of early Republican modernization in the provinces.
