The aim of this study was to investigate the yeast population density and diversity on ten different grape varieties cultivated in three vineyard regions of Bozcaada. Grape samples were collected between September and October in 2009 vintage. A total of 227 non-Saccharomyces yeast isolates from 12 grape samples were identified by using API ID32c system. The yeast population density on grape berry surfaces varied from 103 to 107 CFU/ml. Cryptococcus spp., Metschnikowia spp. and Rhodotorula spp. were widely distributed on the grape surface flora. The predominant species Cryptococcus laurentii and Metschnikowia pulcherrima were found nearly in all grape samples. Grape varieties such as Bozcaada Çavuşu, having sweet taste and thin grape skin, were preferred mostly by yeast species. In addition, the diversity of yeast species on grape surface was increased when the different types of grape varieties cultivated in the same vineyard region.
