Abstract

The aim of the present study was to test the construct validity and reliability of Turkish version of the Decisional Balance Scale for Exercise (DBSE) among university students. 247 university students (nmale = 133; M age=23.0, SD=1.89 and nfemale = 114; M age=21.9, SD=1.25) voluntarily participated to this study. “Physical Activity Stages of Change Questionnaire (SOCQ)” and “Decisional Balance Scale for Exercise” were administered to all participants. DBSE involves ten items that measures perceived pros (advantages) and cons (disadvantages) of continuing and adopting a current exercise behavior (Plotnikoff et al., 2001). Principal Components Factor Analysis with direct oblimin rotation supported two factors (Factor 1 pros and Factor 2 cons) for 247 university students. 10 items of DBSE explained 64.13 % of the total variance. The factor loadings of items were ranged from .67 to .88. Internal consistency coefficients were 0.91 for pros and 0.74 for cons. Pros and cons scores of participants in different stages of exercise behavior were also compared by using Analysis of Variance to support the construct validity of DBSE. ANOVA results for each sex revealed significant difference in pros scores among participants at different stages of exercise behavior (p<0.05). It can be concluded that DBSE is a valid and reliable instruments for measuring perceived pros and cons of continuing and adopting current exercise behavior.
