Tarih boyunca müzik türleri birçok farklı sebep ile etkileşim içerisinde bulunup, müzikal
temellerinden uzaklaşmadan birbirleriyle ilişkili hale gelmişlerdir. Kültürel yapılar, göç, siyasi
etkenler, sanatçıların eğitim ortaklığı gibi etkenler bunlardan yalnızca birkaçıdır. Bu kapsamda
birçok deneme gerçekleştirilirken çok az sayıda girişim başarılı olup yeni bir müzik tarzına yol
açmıştır. İnsana dair öznel bir anlatım biçimi olan müziğin, sınırlarını çizebilmek olası değildir.
Her müzik türü kendi içerisinde doğruluğunu kabul ettiği temel yapıyla var olmaya odaklanırken,
bu türler arasındaki yaklaşım farklılıkları müzikal bir zenginlik sağlamaktadır. Müziğin ana
öğeleri olan armoni, ritim ve melodi bakımından yakın olan türlerin bestecileri bu alanda örnekler
sunmak için çaba sarf etmişlerdir. Ne var ki caz ve klasik gibi sanat müziği türlerinin birbirleriyle
olan ilişkilerini, gelişimlerine ve aynı zamanda değişimlerine yön veren etkileşimlerini ortaya
koyan kaynaklara halen ihtiyaç olduğu düşünülmektedir. Bu araştırma kapsamında; klasik ve caz
müziğinin ortak armonik, melodik ve ritmik yapı birlikteliğinin incelenmesi temel alınmış olup
ayrıntılı bir anlatıya yer verilmiştir. İki türün müzik tarihi içerisinde birbirlerinden etkilenme
süreçlerinin içeriğine değinilirken Third Stream örneği irdelenerek açıklanmıştır. Third Stream,
1950'lerde Gunther Schuller tarafından caz ve klasik müzik öğelerinin yeni (üçüncü bir müzik
akışı) müzik yaratılması lehine karışımını tanımlamak için türetilen bir terimdir. Bu tür müzikal
deneyimler, Paul Hindemith, Igor Stravinsky ve Darius Milhaud gibi modernist bestecilerin
kendilerini yeni Amerikan müziğinin büyüsüne kaptırdıkları yirminci yüzyılın başlarından beri
yapılmış ve 1950'ler ve 60'lar boyunca müzisyenler tarafından keşfedilmeye devam edilmiştir..
Çalışmada Third Stream dönemi ayrıntılı bir şekilde incelenirken, Gunther Schuller’ e de geniş
bir yer verilecektir. Her müzik döneminin bir ya da birkaç öncü sanatçısının olduğu varsayımıyla,
kaynaklar, metotlar ve temsili yapıtlar incelenmiş olup Third Stream döneminin öncü isminin
Gunther Schuller olduğu sonucuna varılabilir. İki müzik türünü birbiriyle ilişkilendiren müzikal
yaklaşım, referans kullanımı, parafraz ve müzikal atıf gibi ayrıntılar ifade edilecektir. Müzik
icrası öznelinde türler arasındaki bağlantı genellikle başarısızlıkla sonuçlandığı
gözlemlenmektedir. Bu çalışma klasik müzik ve caz müziğinin ilintili taraflarını gösterdiği kadar
Third Stream türü içeriğinin ne olmadığına da odaklanmış, sonuç olarak tarihsel süreç içindeki
gelişimlerinin de incelenmesiyle caz müziği ve klasik müziklerinin birbirinden etkilendiği, aynı zamanda Third Stream türünün belirtilen iki müzik kolundan ayrı bir akım olduğu yargısına
varılmıştır.
Throughout history, musical genres have interacted for many different reasons and have become
related without departing from their musical foundations. Factors such as cultural structures,
migration, political factors, and educational partnership of artists are just a few of them. While
many attempts were made in this context, very few attempts were successful and led to a new
musical style. It is not possible to draw the boundaries of music, which is a subjective form of
expression about human beings. While each genre of music focuses on existing with the basic
structure it accepts as correct, the differences in approach between these genres provide a musical
richness. Composers of genres that are close in terms of harmony, rhythm and melody, which are
the main elements of music, have made an effort to present examples in this field. However, there
is still a need for resources that reveal the relationships of high culture art music structures such
as jazz and classical music with each other, as well as the interactions that guide their
development and change. In this study, it is aimed to provide the above-mentioned achievements.
In the scope of the research; It is based on the examination of the common harmonic, melodic
and rhythmic structure of classical and jazz music and details are included. While the content of
the processes of influence of the two genres from each other in the history of music is mentioned,
the example of Third Stream is examined and explained. Third Stream is a term coined by
Gunther Schuller in the 1950s to describe the mixing of jazz and classical music elements in
favor of the creation of new (a third stream of music) music. Such musical experiences had been
around since the early twentieth century, when modernist composers such as Paul Hindemith,
Igor Stravinsky, and Darius Milhaud were fascinated by the new American music, and continued
to be discovered by musicians throughout the 1950s and 60s. In the study, while the Third Stream
period is examined in depth, Gunther Schuller will be given a wide place. Assuming that each
musical period has one or more pioneer artists, sources, methods and representative works have
been examined and it can be concluded that the leading name of the Third Stream period is
Gunther Schuller. Details such as musical approach, use of reference, paraphrase and musical
attribution, which relate two musical genres to each other, will be expressed. It is observed that
the connection between genres in the subject of musical performance is generally unsuccessful.
This study focuses on what the Third Stream period content is not, as well as showing the related
sides of classical music and jazz music. As a result of such elaboration, it was observed that the
two music genres were influenced by each other. Third Stream example can be said to exist as a
style by relating the basic elements of classical music and jazz music without disturbing it.
