Abstract

The Berit metaophiolite is an ordered ophiolite slab which occurs at the westernmost part of the SE Anatolian ophiolitic belt, in the Engizek-Berit mountain ranges (north of

K.Mara§). It is sandwiched between the nappe slices of the nappe zone.

The Beritmetaophiolite is represented from the bottom to the top; with the layers of ultramafic and mafic cumulate rocks, sheeted and the massive diabases.

The Berit ophiolite underwent polyphase metamorphism in the following order; an ocean-floor hydrothermal metamorphism, reaching up to amphibolite facies, granulite-eclogite facies which is detected along a narrow zone of the cumulate gabroes formed as a contact aurole and, the final phase of dynamic retrograde metamorphism.

These metamoiphic events occurred, starting from the time of generation of the ophiolite

in the oceanic environment to the emplacement of the ophiolite onto the other nappes.
