Chronic obstructive pulmonary disease is the leading cause of morbidity and mortality. Physiological symptoms originating from chronic obstructive pulmonary disease cause limitations in individuals' activities of daily living and affect their physical and psychosocial well-being, family relationships and social lives negatively. It causes psychosocial problems such as anxiety, depression, increased addiction level, and social isolation. During all these stressful life events, the struggle of individuals to fight their disease decreases, and the need for social support increases. Social support which is sufficient perceived is important in reducing the burden of chronic diseases and improving health outcomes. Therefore, nurses who take part in the management of chronic disease approach not only the physical needs of the patients but also their social upport resources and needs. In the literature, self-efficacy, quality of life, adherence to treatment is affected negatively by insufficient social support in individuals who have chronic obstructive pulmonary disease. Moreover, it was emphasized that health professionals should fulfill their roles and responsibilities in this respect(regard). Consequently, in this review, the perceived social support and nursing approach of individuals with chronic obstructive pulmonary disease are discussed.
