As a core part of global trade, freight transportation has experienced rapid growth over the last two decades. The process of designing highly efficient and cost effective transportation networks is a crucial task for freight transport. The major modes of transport are airways, railways, roadways, and waterways. Although road transport is still currently the major mode of freight transportation, the use of intermodal transportation is a desirable option to establish a sustainable transport system. Intermodal transportation can be defined as the carriage of goods in the same loading unit through the combination of two or more transport modes successively, without handling of the goods themselves when changing modes. The development and use of intermodal transportation corridors has economic, social and environmental advantages. In this study, we present a brief review of the literature on intermodal freight transportation at strategic, tactical, and operational levels.
