The poly (acrylic acid) / Tetra ethyl ortho silicate (PAA/TEOS) hybrid thin
films were obtained through simultaneous polymerization of the organic monomer
and sol-gel process of the inorganic precursor. The organic/inorganic (Ormosil)
composites were produced at a one-pot synthesis of the sol-gel process with
free radical polymerization simultaneously surfactant-free medium. Ammonium
persulfate (APS) was used as an initiator for radical polymerization, while
NaOH is the catalyst for the sol-gel reaction. The one-step one-pot reaction
lasted for 2 hours at 75 oC. The thin films of the TEOS/PAA Ormosil
surface were obtained by a dip coating method. Dip coating of the glass slides
was carried out with a mechanical dipper which moves vertically at a constant
speed of 400 mm/min at room temperature. To achieve the best conditions for a
simultaneous synthesis TEOS concentration and AA/TEOS ratio were determined
according to the wettability performance of thin films. The surface
characterization of thin films was determined by air, underwater contact angle,
and light transmittances. In addition, the surface morphology of the ormosil
surface was characterized by AFM and SEM. The superhydrophilic surface was
determined for water contact angle in the air. However, underwater contact
angles were determined by using hexadecane and dichloromethane drops. The
contact angle results indicated that the superhydrophilic and underwater superoleophobic
ormosil PAA/TEOS surfaces were obtained. The contact angle values of water
hexadecane and dichloromethane were found as 8o,170o, and
156o, respectively.
