In Istanbul,
the capital of the Ottoman Empire, mosques, which are monumental structures,
stand out compared to other architectural structures in terms of calligraphy practices.
One of the leading elements of the calligraphy programs of mosques is dome
calligraphies. The preferred texts in dome calligraphies consist of verses,
with some exceptions. One of the most striking examples of the verses preferred
as dome calligraphy is the 41st verse of Surah Fatir. For our study, the dome
calligraphies of Rüstem Pasha, Sultan Ahmed, Ayazma, Kadırga Sokullu Şehid
Mehmed Pasha and Şemsi Ahmed Pasha mosques were selected. The selected dome
calligraphies have been examined in terms of form, starting from the first
examples that have survived to the present day, the process of change has been
discussed, and its place in the history of calligraphy has been tried to be
revealed.
