Skeletal system involvement is rare in echinococcal infections. Skeletal involvement is usually due to secondary spread after hematogenous spread of the infection. The vertebral column, ribs, pelvis and skull are the most frequently involved sites. Vertebral involvement is a rare disease seen in 1% of all cases. There are no characteristic signs or symptoms. The preferred treatment is surgery, where surgical treatment is not possible and medical treatment is arranged in addition to surgical treatment.
