Public Urban forests are important recreation areas. In this context, the urban forest “Oconee Forest Park”
in Athens (Georgia-USA) was investigated. The Oconee urban forest is a natural forest area of approximately 60-
acre at University of Georgia in Athens. The area is managed by University of Georgia’s Warnell School of Forest
Natural Resources. Oconee Forest Park provides recreation, outdoor teaching, and research opportunities for the
University. The area is a living laboratory for faculty and students providing education in forestry, botany, ecology,
dendrology and horticulture. At the same time, this area allows the city residents recreational activity opportunities
in nature. The park manager, Dan Williams, along with student interns maintain the labels of individual specimens
for educational purposes. Thus, those who come to the area can both enjoy the park and learn about the tree
speciees. This study analyses and discusses the main qualities of an urban forest, which can be applied to different
regions.

Kent ormanları önemli kamusal rekreasyon alanlarıdır. Bu bağlamda, Athens (Georgia-USA) kentinde yer
alan, “Oconee Forest Park” isimli kent ormanı incelenmiştir. Oconee kent ormanı, Georgia eyaletindeki Georgia
Üniversitesi kampüsünde yaklaşık 243 dönümlük doğal orman alanıdır. Alan, “Georgia Üniversitesi Warnell
Orman Kaynakları” bölümü tarafından yönetilmektedir. Oconee kent ormanı, üniversite için rekreasyon, eğitim
ve araştırma olanakları sunmaktadır. Alan orman mühendisliği, botanik, ekoloji, dendroloji ve bahçe bitkileri
eğitimi veren fakülteler için canlı bir laboratuvar niteliğindedir. Aynı zamanda kentlinin doğal alanda rekreasyon
yapmasına da olanak sağlamaktadır. Park müdürü, Dan Williams, stajyer öğrencileri ile birlikte park yönetimini
sürdürürken, eğitim amacı ile birçok bitki örneğini de etiketlemiştir. Böylece alana gelenler hem eğlenerek spor
yapmakta hem de ağaçları tanıyabilmektedir. Sonuç olarak bu çalışmada farklı birçok bölgeye uygulanabilecek bir
kent ormanı örneği analiz edilerek temel nitelikleri belirlenmiştir.
