Abstract

Smoker's best thing to promote their health condition is simply to quit smoking. Only 10% percent of the ex-smokers success in quitting smoking by themselves while others need professional help. In this article we aimed to guide primary care physicians by reviewing the recent behavioural and pharmacological approaches in counselling smoking quittance. Only with the quittance suggestion from their primary care physician, 6% of the individuals quit smoking and this is a huge ratio as 40% of the adult population in our country is currently smoking. By their cognitive prepare of quittance the smokers are divided into five separate groups (precontemplators, contemplators, preparation stage, action stage, maintenance stage). In the previous studies it has been claimed that the best results could be obtained when the behavioural and pharmacological approaches applied together.
